Started in 1994 by Jim Schmidt, the Great Outdoors Landscape Co has been proudly serving the Truckee and North Tahoe area. As a full service landscape company we take pride in every aspect of our work, as well as the community. We are fully Licensed and Insured. California Business license #930244.
The company is constantly volunteering with local non profit organizations in Truckee. We’ve done work with the Truckee River Watershed Council. Helping in protecting and revitalizing local Lakes, Rivers Streams and Wetlands. Owner Jim volunteers his time and materials at fundraisers for the Truckee Optimist club. We’ve also done work for the Truckee Donner Railroad Society. Recently building retaining walls for the children’s train system at Truckee Regional Park.
We use only local business to source our materials, when ever possible. As well as subcontract any work we may need locally. Working with the Great Outdoors Landscape Co not only benefits you, it benefits the entire community.
Jim, the owner of the Great Outdoors Landscape Co, began his career as a self employed provider of landscape maintenance services. Jim attended the University of Idaho and graduated with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree in 1987. While attending the University of Idaho, Jim was employed as the campus Landscape Architect during his senior and thesis years.
After graduating, Jim relocated to San Francisco where he was employed by the distinguished landscape architecture firms Anthony Guzzardo and Associates and Melvin Lee and Associates as well as the architecture and planning firm of Sandy and Babcock. At these design firms Jim gained valuable real life experience in many capacities as a Landscape Architect. Jim was quickly acknowledged by his peers as an outstanding landscape designer.
In 1991, Jim moved to the Tahoe and Truckee area where he was employed as a landscape construction foreman. As a foreman, Jim was able to learn about the unique challenges of gardening in the high altitude environment from experienced contractors. In 1994, Jim founded the Great Outdoors Landscape Co.
